What we are doing:
We launched just over two years ago a global digital team, led by Roman Regelman, a former BCG partner who drove a number of large scale digital transformations for global financial services clients. The Digital team drives BNY Mellon’s core digitization strategy and is responsible for mapping our digital future, investing in digital client and internal capabilities, including data management, analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain and others.
The Digital team focuses on maximizing the impact of our investments in digital capabilities by driving significant improvements in business performance, developing new service offerings / products as well as enhancing client and employee experience. The team is accelerating execution of the bank’s innovation strategy
Reason for Nomination
Houssem is an accomplished Data Scientist (PhD) in the Advanced Solutions Group. In addition to building AI solutions, Houssem has established collaborations with Irish universities and research institutes (University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, CeADAR UCD, Insight Centre for Data Analytics, ADAPT), enhancing BNY Mellon’s profile in the academic and data science community and attracting talent. Houssem has fuelled PhD researchers and student engagement on the use of AI within industry in Ireland, broadening their perspective from a focus on academic research to become more industry oriented, alongside advocating for diversity within the field. Furthermore, Houssem has participated in high visibility international events such as TICAD representing Ireland’s inputs from the finance industry.
Houssem initiated and led a successful grant proposal with Industrial Development Agency (IDA) in collaboration with the Custody team. The grant supports companies undertaking R&D activities. Thanks to Houssem and team, IDA will cover 30%+ of cost for a BNY Mellon team of 40+ professionals in Technology, Product and Data Science in Ireland.
Houssem is active in BNY Mellon’s patent program and has developed a novel AI solution for handwriting recognition that is currently patent pending and won an enterprise-wide innovation award. He is committed to helping others and mentors colleagues, and he was recently elevated to take the role of Data Science EMEA Lead.

BNY Mellon is the largest global custodian and the oldest US bank. Its presence in Ireland includes an AI/ML and data science team that is growing in size and gaining more visibility across the bank, and also expanding its reach to the local ecosystem such as universities (UCD, Trinity, DCU, UCC, MTU, NCI), data science communities, and start-ups. BNY Mellon started to organise face to face meet-ups on various topics (e.g. data science, diversity driving innovation) for the first time in Ireland during 2022 and to invite data science students for site visits.
