Built in IBM’s Dublin campus, Maximo Civil Infrastructure provides infrastructure owners with an accurate account of the history, condition, and planned activity that is related to assets on and in bridges, roads, tunnels, and railways. By using Maximo Civil Infrastructure, organizations can more efficiently inspect structures and manage the defects that are identified during inspections and manage routine work on structures. In addition, Maximo Civil Infrastructure can use sensors that are installed on structures to obtain greater insights into the infrastructure that is being managed.

Reason for Nomination:

Much of the world’s civil infrastructure has reached — or exceeded — its useful life span, leading to a $2 trillion backlog of improvements to more than a million structures globally. It’s a critical economic and environmental growth initiative to ensure the continuity of daily life for citizens.

IBM Maximo for Civil Infrastructure merges digital intelligence with engineering know-how. It helps operators safely monitor, manage and maintain infrastructure assets, predict failures, and prioritize repairs.

The solution also enables technicians, inspectors, drones, and robots to take images of infrastructure and use AI to automatically detect defects in infrastructure that can be analysed and mitigated sustainably with the solution.

With these capabilities, one of our key customers, Sund & Baelt, is able to prolong the life of the Great Belt Link from 100 to 200 years. Those extra 100 years will save the company the cost of new construction and reduce its carbon footprint by 750,000 tons, twice the mass of the Empire State Building—an achievement for both the business and the environment.

Additional Information:

Note, this nomination is not for me, but for the Maximo for Civil Infrastructure development team. I am the program director for Maximo industry solutions, of which Maximo for Civil Infrastructure is our newest solution. The development team is based out of the IBM Dublin campus and have driven the growth of the product from its first release in 2020. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, bringing the power of AI to drive the sustainable management of the world’s critical infrastructure.
