We all know hospital waiting times have been making headline news for a number of years but now this is a spiralling crisis and action needs to be taken now more than ever.

With over 900,000 people on waiting lists in Ireland, almost 350,000 people in NI waiting for a first consultant lead appointment and 5.6m people waiting for some form of hospital treatment in England. Our health services need AI technology to help them understand the inefficiencies within service delivery and to create demand models that can support reduce those waiting lists.

Stimul.ai is a SaaS platform that acts as a strategic clinical design tool, built to help reduce hospital waiting lists.

Following 10 years of academic research, Stimul.ai is a new spinout company from the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at University College, Cork. Developed by Professor Barry O’Sullivan. The new company is led by CEO, Naomh McElhatton.

The software currently in phase one of development. It supports hospital clinics to make better capacity planning decisions by ensuring clinics are designed to maximum efficiency. Through the use of machine learning, the software processes and analyses a departments historical data, through the simulation predicts future demands and delivers evidence-based data intelligence that allows hospitals to make the right strategic decisions when it comes to planning delivery performance.

Reason for Nomination:

Waiting times are a notable phenomenon in publicly funded health care systems. Lengthy waiting times are a major source of patient dissatisfaction, they can prolong suffering and can also result in a patient’s health getting worse, including a significant rise in mental health issues.

Our goal is to help support the transformation of universal health services, through the reduction of waiting lists to enable better patient care and experiences.

The health economics statistic on the cost of waiting lists is the mortality % of people on a waiting list. This is a very grim stat.

Currently too many assumptions are made as to what the inefficiencies and gaps are. Stimul.ai provides strategic demand models for clinics by using actual hospital data that looks at the current resources and capacity available.

Our methodology which is data and AI driven creates a demand model for clinics, this can be for a specific clinic or regional departments geographically spread offering the same service. Through the data supplied by hospital including patient categories, time allocations etc. the machine learning simulation then produces a number of scenarios based on the input data. Providing evidence based intel that identifies current inefficiencies and a plan on how to improve clinic set up based on current resources and capacity.

We then deliver the results which are summarised into KPIs which tunes the strategy parameters to obtain the best outcome for clinics, based on their speciality. The report findings are presented in the form of a dashboard, which shows all major results on how to best design service delivery to email a reduction in waiting times. We work with the teams at every touch point to explore the number of ways to run the clinic most effectively.

We are fully GDPR compliant as we require no personal patient information and there is no risk as we will never worsen a clinics waiting list. Processes that normally take huge volumes of laborious human hours are now automated at a super human rate saving teams an abundance of time.

Whilst our expertise currently focuses on publicly funded hospitals and clinics, aside from a deep understanding of AI we can support in a number of additional ways including:
– More effective resource management
– Impactful strategic planning across an entire health care ecosystem
– We can act as an evidence based procurement evaluation tool for hospitals, government and other health tech providers – when you want to know if investing in a new MRI scanner will actually help reduce a waiting list – using Stimul.ai will give you the insights you require.

We have tested the software with previously collected data from the ENT speciality in Waterford, which runs clinics in multiple hospitals in the area. We have also used available NTPF data to understand the current status of the waiting times at the national level. The research team have ran a number of pilots over the years, including MRI diagnostics in Waterford Regional Hospital reducing the waiting list by 65%.

We have 3 live pilots running at the moment in England and Northern Ireland – full results will be available in November 2021.

Our solution focuses on publicly funded health services globally. Whilst our test bed for continuous product validation is in Ireland and UK our main area for growth is in Canada and Australia. To date we have successfully engaged with PWC in Toronto. Through their Life Science and Pharma team we are working in partnership with other health tech providers who are already successfully integrated within the Canadian healthcare ecosystem.

Stimul.ai is a challenger! On a mission to disrupt the status quo to help transform the delivery of health services by reducing hospital waiting lists.

Whilst there are a number of similar products in the market, we look to partner with our competitors to offer a stronger end to end proposition.
