With 40% of its communities classified as rural, Mayo Clinic Health System plays a vital role in providing access to Mayo Clinic-quality care closer to home.

The conversation delved into the challenges faced by healthcare providers, including workforce shortages, access to specialists, and time constraints in patient interactions. Prathibha outlined Mayo Clinic’s proactive approach to addressing these challenges through innovative solutions, with a particular emphasis on leveraging AI.

E141 ‘A System-Centric Approach in Healthcare AI Development’ with Mark Sujan

Today’s guest is Mark Sujan, Professor of Safety Science at Centre for Assuring Autonomy at the University of York. In the episode, Mark gives an overview of his talk at the RCSI Conference in which he talked about the need for a shift towards a human-centered approach to AI in healthcare, advocating for a transition from a technology-centric focus to a systems perspective. 

Mark highlights the importance of considering the complexity of clinical systems and designing AI technologies to work effectively within them, while also addressing concerns about safety and stakeholder engagement. He also stressed that safety in healthcare AI is not solely about the technology itself but rather about how it is used within the clinical system.

Mark discusses the need to design interactions that prioritise the well-being of patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders, emphasising the importance of maintaining relationships in the face of technological advancements.

Addressing common fears surrounding AI, he acknowledges that much of the apprehension stems from media representations and concerns about job displacement. However, he argued that AI should be viewed as a tool to augment rather than replace human capabilities, potentially leading to improvements in healthcare delivery.

Mark speaks about the importance of earning and maintaining trust among patients and healthcare professionals, underscoring the need to reassure them that AI will not negatively impact their care or relationships. 

He emphasises the positive feedback from patients regarding AI in healthcare but noted the importance of addressing their concerns. This will include qualifying their support based on trust in healthcare providers and the assurance that AI will enhance, rather than detract from, their care experiences.

This hands-free approach eliminates the necessity for manual app navigation, showcasing the seamless integration of AI into personal assistants.

Anura MagicMirror by NuraLogix: Groundbreaking Health Monitoring Device

NuraLogix introduced the Anura MagicMirror, a pioneering device that analyzes blood flow in the face to assess vital signs like blood pressure and estimate heart disease risk. Utilising Affective AI technology, the MagicMirror offers insights into age and stress levels, showing promise in gyms, clinics and other health monitoring settings.

Volkswagen’s ChatGPT Integration: AI in Automotive Technology

Volkswagen plans to integrate ChatGPT into its electric vehicle lineup, including models like the ID 3, ID 4 and ID 5, as well as gas-powered vehicles like Tiguan, Passat and Golf. This integration will empower car owners to utilize ChatGPT for various inquiries, such as finding nearby restaurants, reflecting a broader trend of AI integration in automotive technology.

Oro Dog Companion Robot by Ogmen Robotics: Intelligent Pet Interaction

The Oro Dog Companion Robot enables remote interaction with pets through two-way audio, video display, treat dispensing and autonomous navigation. Employing AI learning, Oro adapts to a dog’s behavior patterns, providing companionship and responding to signs of distress or restlessness.

DeRucci Smart Mattresses and Anti-Snore Smart Pillow: AI-Enhanced Sleep Solutions

Chinese sleep health company DeRucci presented AI-powered mattresses and a smart pillow designed to enhance sleep quality. The mattress, equipped with 23 sensors, monitors temperature, sleep position and heart rate, adjusting support for optimal comfort. Yarbo Snow Blower S1 Plus: Efficient Snow Clearance with AI

Amidst winter storms in the U.S., Yarbo’s Snow Blower S1 Plus seized the spotlight. This fully automated snow blower, equipped with object avoidance and mapping features, promises effortless snow clearance while ensuring comfort indoors. Capable of rotating 180 degrees and blowing snow up to 40 feet, it represents a timely and practical application of AI.

Cappella AI-Powered Baby Cry Translator: Insights into Infant Needs

Cappella introduced an AI-powered app claiming to “translate” baby cries, providing insights into hunger, discomfort, tiredness, or the need for a diaper change. With a reported accuracy of around 95%, this innovative application showcases diverse applications of AI in everyday life.

Moonbird: Stress Reduction in the Palm of Your Hand

Moonbird, a stress-reducing device that fits in the palm of your hand, utilises AI to guide users in proper breathing techniques. The device expands and contracts to facilitate controlled breathing, aiding in stress reduction and balancing the autonomic nervous system.

Holobox: Realizing Hologram Communication

The Holobox revolutionises hologram communication, transitioning it from a sci-fi concept to reality. Resembling a telephone booth, it projects real-life holograms of individuals during conversations. For optimal visibility, the person being projected should stand in front of a well-lit, white background.

E129 Emanuel Popovici, Director at the Embedded Systems Group, University College Cork
